Wines Of Ukraine Tasting Evening

Winemaking is not really something we in the UK associate with Ukraine, particularly at the moment, but traditional, old wineries have been producing excellent quality wines for centuries. These days, Ukraine is home to over 150 wineries, with the majority located in the South. Ukrainian wine is gaining recognition and popularity internationally, with several producers winning awards at highly regarded international wine competitions. The winemaking industry in Ukraine is growing, focusing on quality over quantity with a return to traditional wine making techniques.

Cellar Door Wines are delighted to be hosting this unique wine tasting at Cellar Door Wines in St Albans, with Ukrainian wine representative Tania Olevska. We will discover hidden gems from multiple world class wine producers across the country.

During this event, you will have the opportunity to meet and listen to Portuguese and natural wine expert, Ricardo Rodrigues of Portuguese Story Wines. Ricardo regularly hosts tastings for us here Cellar Door Wines. Those who have met him know that most of his portfolio of wines is made using very little intervention in the vineyard or in the winery. This tasting will be a great opportunity to learn about the new generation of winemakers emerging in the Lisbon region of Portugal.

Portuguese Douro Valley Wine Tasting with Quinta Da Pedra Alta

The Douro Valley has been the home of Port for centuries. More recently, many Quinta or wine estates have been turning their hand to making elegant and often age worthy still whites and reds. The historic Quinta da Pedra Alta is one such producer. We have been very impressed with João Pires' modern winemaking skills, capturing the potential of still wines from this beautiful country.

The Quinta da Pedra Alta (high stone) winery is located in Soutelinho Favaios near Alijó, in the Cima Corgo sub-region of the Douro Valley, Portugal. Quinta da Pedra Alta is the only vineyard in the Douro to have three granite markers (Marcos Pombalinos) on its property. These were awarded to the best land during the demarcation of the Port region in 1761. Winemakers Matt Gant and João Pires share the same vision when it comes to making wines: they endeavour to find the essence of what the land has to offer.

Sparkling Wine Masterclass and Tasting at St Saviour's

We are very excited to be involved again this year with the St Saviour's Church Beer and Fizz Festival 2024! The festival is held over three days, offering fine ales, cider and a selection of fizz curated by the team at Save St Albans’ Pubs and Cellar Door Wines in the unique surroundings of St Saviour’s Church. There will be live music with local bands throughout the weekend and a fantastic choice of street food vendors.

The late afternoon sparkling wine tasting will be presented by Jen Connan of the Hertfordshire Wine School and supported by Cellar Door Wines. Proceeds from the tasting will go to the St Saviour's nominated charities for the weekend.

We will be tasting 6 sparkling wines in total including Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, Crémant and other traditional method wines from around the globe. We will cover rosé, blanc de blanc, blanc de noir, non- vintage and vintage styles. There will be cheese, cured meats and snacks provided to keep you going for the afternoon. You will learn to see and taste the difference between bottle fermented sparkling wine and tank method bubbles and have great fun in the process!
