St. Albans: A Historic City with Modern Charm

St. Albans is a beautiful market city nestled in the valley of the River Ver in Hertfordshire — just an 18-minute train ride from London St. Pancras International. With a rich 2,000-year history, this charming commuter city blends historic heritage with vibrant, modern living.

It offers a quaint village atmosphere, with cobbled streets, a magnificent cathedral (the longest in the country), England’s oldest pub, the only fully excavated Roman amphitheatre in Britain, and numerous medieval buildings that give the city its distinctive character.

There are countless reasons why so many choose to call St. Albans home. A strong sense of community thrives here, thanks to the abundance of independent shops, cafés, and local businesses. The city hosts a bustling weekly street market and a popular monthly farmers’ market, known for offering some of the best local produce in the region.

St. Albans is also rich in green space. Right in the heart of the city, Verulamium Park offers 100 acres of open space to relax, walk, or play. With a museum, athletics track, model boating lake, and year-round events, it’s a favourite for both locals and visitors. Nearby Clarence Park is another beloved spot, home to the local football and cricket clubs, and known for its family-friendly Sunday concerts at the bandstand during the summer.

St. Albans has earned national recognition, recently named by The Sunday Times as the best place to live in the southeast, and one of the top cities in the UK to raise a family. It’s also renowned for its outstanding education system, with both state and private schools consistently achieving excellent Ofsted ratings.

FACT!

In the third century AD Christians were being persecuted. A Roman soldier, called Alban gave his cloak to a Christian priest to help him to escape. Subsequently Alban was beheaded on Holywell Hill and became the first British saint. As the Roman city declined the town was named St. Alban.
