the hub

We caught up with our members Alex and Hannah to find out more about the faces behind The Hub on Verulam in St. Albans, Hertfordshire.

Alex Hannah the hub on verulam St Albans hertfordshire

Hi Alex and Hannah. The Hub offers SO much to the local community and what a pleasure to have you in St Albans! When did you decide to set up The Hub on Verulam and how long before it’s grand launch?

Hey guys, thank you for having us. We had been looking for the right venue for around 18 months in both London and Hertfordshire before we came across the old Loch Fyne building. Alex grew up in St. Albans and knew the area well, so when he saw the building online, he knew it could be just what we had been looking for.

What spaces and facilities does the hub offer?

We have lots of different spaces available, from our co-working mezzanine, a large outdoor yard & bar, 2 screening rooms showing film and sport, creative workshop space and private hire options.

Do people have to be a member to enjoy some of the activities you have on offer?

No, which I think is a common misconception locally. Membership enables you to work from the space with free coffee, to enjoy lots of discounted event tickets and free film tickets. But guests can eat, drink and enjoy events with us too, tickets and tables are all available to buy and book online.

tell us a bit more about the benefits of your membership packages?

Our working membership allows you access to our working areas, with free coffee, free film tickets and discounted event tickets. It also includes food and drink discounts up to 50%.

In what ways do you cater for families?

We have tons of family events each month, from kids’ workshops, to crafting, toddler screenings every day and mum & baby screenings each week. We have a big family fun day ‘FAM-FUN-FEST’ coming up on the 28th of July, which is set to be a really great day out for all the family.

what is the best way for local people to keep on track with the events and promotions you have each week?

On our social media @thehubonverulam and on our website. The Book Tickets page shows all our upcoming movies and events. Our mailing list receives all the goings-on first, which can be joined via social media or in-house.

Your open kitchen offers up delicious fare, can you tell us more about your menu?

The Open Kitchen menu is designed to highlight the best our local suppliers have to offer, with healthier options readily available as well as classic dishes done well. Personal favourites are the Tuna Poke Bowl & the Harissa Spiced Pulled Lamb with Israeli Cous Cous. We’re open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner – so it’s a full day affair.

People might be surprised to know you have screening rooms – what do you show?

Yes, we have 2 screening rooms, 1 designed for sport and kids’ screenings, and 1 for grown-ups! We show toddler and kids movies every day at 10.30am in ‘The Terrace’ and movies in ‘The Box’ every Tues-Sun. You can find out what’s on via our website, or by joining the mailing list that receives our movie list each month.

When you’re not hanging out at The Hub itself, where do you like to grab a bite in St Albans?

We have 2 young children, so date nights are currently pretty few and far between. Ha! But when we get the chance we like anywhere with a buzzy atmosphere and easy, good food.
