Meet The Member - Red Robins Companions
We caught up with the team at Red Robins Companions to learn more about the inspiring story behind this trusted local business. Founded on kindness, friendship and personalised support, they help older people remain independent at home while bringing comfort, companionship and peace of mind to families across St. Albans and the surrounding area.
We are happy to have Red Robins Companions as part of the We Are St Albans community! Could you tell us a little about the journey behind the business – what inspired the creation of Red Robins Companions, and how has it grown into the trusted local service it is today?
Before starting Red Robins Companions, I worked for a local home help company for five years. I absolutely loved supporting older people and their families, but over time I realised I wanted to do things differently. I wanted to create a service where people never felt rushed, where genuine friendships could grow and where families felt involved every step of the way.
I also wanted to offer practical day-to-day support that helps people remain independent in their own homes. Whether it’s preparing a meal, changing a bed, helping around the house, accompanying someone to an appointment or simply sharing a cup of tea and a chat, I wanted every visit to make a real difference.
The inspiration behind Red Robins Companions came from one very special lady called Betty. Betty and I became the best of friends while I was supporting her, and one of our favourite things to do was feed the robins that visited her garden. She was funny, independent, incredibly sassy and taught me so much about life. Betty enriched my life in ways she’ll never know and became the inspiration behind everything Red Robins Companions stands for.
For many people, robins are a symbol of comfort, hope and loved ones watching over us. I’d like to think every one of our Robins brings that same comfort and reassurance into the homes of the people we support.
Although Red Robins Companions has grown, I still personally meet every new client and their family. I take time to understand who they are, what they enjoy and what support they need before carefully matching them with the Robin I believe they’ll build the strongest friendship with.
I also still visit clients every week because that’s the part of my job I love the most. Spending time with our wonderful clients is what inspired me to start Red Robins Companions, and it’s something I’ll never give up, no matter how much the business grows. It keeps me connected to the people we support and reminds me every day why I started this journey.
Today, we’re proud to support older people across St Albans, Harpenden and the surrounding villages, helping them stay happy, independent and connected in the homes they love. Every Robin who walks through a client’s front door carries the same kindness, warmth and compassion that Betty inspired in me all those years ago.
Red Robins Companions is built around helping older people remain happy, independent and connected in their own homes. What do you find most rewarding about making such a positive difference to the lives of your clients and their families?
Without question, it’s seeing people smile again. Watching someone regain their confidence, start enjoying life again or rediscover hobbies they thought they’d lost is incredibly rewarding. Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest difference.
The greatest compliment we receive is when clients and their families tell us we’ve become part of their family. We spend meaningful time together, share laughter, celebrate special occasions and support one another through life’s more difficult moments.
Families often tell us we’ve changed not only their loved one’s life but theirs too. Knowing someone they trust is spending quality time with Mum or Dad gives them reassurance and allows them to enjoy their visits together, rather than worrying about everything that needs doing.
Helping people feel valued, listened to and connected again is the reason we do what we do. Seeing that difference in someone’s confidence, happiness and wellbeing is the most rewarding part of my job.
Supporting people across St Albans and South Hertfordshire, what do you enjoy most about being part of the local community, and how does that influence the way Red Robins Companions operates?
St Albans has been my home for over 40 years, so being part of this community means a great deal to me. My mum and dad live here, all three of my adult children have grown up here and still live locally, and over the years I’ve built many friendships and connections within the community.
That local knowledge is reflected in everything we do. All of our Robins come from the local area. Many are people I’ve known and worked with for years, while others have been recommended by trusted friends. I’ve always believed you can teach skills, but you can’t teach kindness. That’s why we recruit people with caring hearts who genuinely want to make a difference.
Because we’re local, we know the places our clients love. Whether it’s a walk around Verulamium Park, visiting St Albans Cathedral, enjoying a coffee in town, browsing the market or attending a local community group, we encourage people to continue enjoying the community they’ve always been part of.
As a small independent business, we’re also passionate about giving something back. We’re always looking for opportunities to work with local charities, community groups and organisations that support older people and their families.
For me, Red Robins Companions has never just been about running a business. It’s about caring for our neighbours and helping older people continue to enjoy life, remain connected to their community and know that someone genuinely cares.
Compassion, kindness and consistency are clearly at the heart of your service. What values and principles guide the way Red Robins Companions supports clients and builds lasting relationships with families?
Everything we do is built around kindness, dignity, respect and consistency. One of the things that makes Red Robins Companions different is our commitment to unhurried visits. Every visit lasts at least one hour, giving our Robins the time to build genuine friendships, enjoy meaningful conversations and support people at a relaxed pace. We believe quality time is just as important as practical support.
Consistency is equally important. Whenever possible, clients are supported by the same Robin each week. Trust takes time to build, and seeing a familiar face makes a huge difference, particularly for people living with dementia.
We also believe good communication is essential. Every week, clients and their families know exactly what time we’ll be arriving and which Robin will be visiting. If someone’s regular Robin is on holiday or unwell, we always keep everyone informed and make sure there’s a smooth handover.
We’re passionate about investing in our team. Every Robin receives comprehensive training in safeguarding, dementia awareness, food hygiene and health and safety before supporting clients. Through our own in-house learning programme, they continue developing their knowledge and skills throughout their time with us.
Many people think home support is only needed when someone requires personal care. How does companionship and practical day-to-day support help people stay independent, confident and connected for longer?
Many people are surprised by just how much difference a little support can make. Our visits are completely tailored around each individual. One day that might mean going shopping, enjoying lunch out, visiting the hairdressers, attending a doctor’s appointment or simply sitting together with a cup of tea.
We’re also happy to help with preparing meals, changing beds, light housekeeping, laundry, paperwork and general household tasks. Whatever helps someone continue living comfortably and independently at home, we’re happy to help. As our clients’ lives change, our support changes with them. Some people simply want companionship at first, while others gradually need more practical help around the home. We’re flexible and work alongside families to make sure our support always reflects what each person needs.
Our focus is companionship and practical day-to-day support. The only services we don’t provide are medical or personal care. One of the biggest benefits is the difference it makes to families. Instead of spending precious time doing jobs, they can simply enjoy being together, creating memories and making the most of every visit.
One of the things that makes Red Robins Companions unique is your focus on building genuine friendships by ensuring clients see familiar faces. Why is continuity so important, and what difference have you seen it make to the people you support?
For us, companionship is about building real friendships. Over time, our Robins become people our clients genuinely look forward to seeing. We chat about our families, holidays, weekends and everyday life, and our clients love hearing about what’s been happening in our lives just as much as we enjoy hearing about theirs.
What I love most is that those conversations continue after we’ve gone. Clients often tell their own families all about what their Robin has been doing or something funny we’ve laughed about together. It gives them fresh conversations to enjoy with their loved ones.
For people living with dementia, familiar faces also bring reassurance and routine. Because we know our clients so well, we’re often the first to notice if something isn’t quite right, allowing us to keep families informed and offer support when it’s needed.
Families are often balancing busy lives while wanting the very best for their loved ones. How do you provide reassurance and peace of mind, not only for your clients but for their families too?
Families place a huge amount of trust in us, and we never take that for granted.
We regularly send photos and updates from our visits so families can see where we’ve been and what we’ve been up to. Those little moments provide reassurance that their loved one is happy, active and enjoying life.
If a family is away on holiday, they’ll often send us photos to share with their mum or dad during our visits. It’s a lovely way of keeping everyone connected and gives them something special to talk about when they’re reunited.
Knowing someone is spending quality time with their loved one, while keeping them informed, gives families real peace of mind.
Looking ahead, are there any exciting plans, new initiatives or ambitions for Red Robins Companions that you’re particularly looking forward to?
I’m always looking for new ways to bring people together and make a positive difference within our community.
We’re currently planning a community afternoon tea with live music, singing, tea and cake in partnership with a local charity. Our hope is that it will become a regular event, bringing people together, reducing loneliness and raising money for a wonderful cause.
Supporting people living with dementia is also very personal to me. My partner’s mum lived with Alzheimer’s, and my dad is living with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. Last year, my partner and I walked 26 miles around Snowdonia, raising over £4,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society. It was one of the hardest things we’ve ever done, but nothing compared with the challenges faced by families living with dementia every day.
As Red Robins Companions continues to grow, one thing will never change—we’ll always remain a personal, relationship-led service that puts people first.
If someone is considering companionship support for a loved one but isn’t sure when the right time is, what advice would you give them, and what would you like more people to understand about the difference your service can make?
My biggest piece of advice is simple: don’t wait until you reach crisis point.
Even a couple of hours of support each week can make a huge difference to someone’s confidence, wellbeing and independence. Alongside companionship, we help with shopping, meal preparation, changing beds, light housekeeping, transport to appointments, paperwork and everyday household tasks. Often, it’s these small jobs that become overwhelming, and a little extra support can make life much easier for everyone.
Starting support early allows people to build a trusting relationship with their Robin and makes it much easier to adapt as needs change. Asking for help isn’t giving up independence—it’s helping someone keep it.
Finally, when the team isn’t out supporting clients, what are some of your favourite places in St Albans to enjoy a coffee, take a walk, or simply relax and unwind?
When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me out walking. I love exploring the beautiful parks and countryside around St Albans with my friends and my partner. One of my favourite places is St Albans Cathedral, where I often light a candle and enjoy a few moments of peace.
Family is incredibly important to me. I love cooking, and we spend lots of time together with my three adult children, my mum and dad, my partner and my partner’s dad. We also enjoy visiting The Prae Wood Arms for good food and a catch-up.
My partner and I love live music, trying new restaurants, gardening, photography, theatre and the ballet. Many of our Robins enjoy the same things, which is why they genuinely love helping our clients continue doing the activities they enjoy too.
If there’s one thing I’d love people to remember about Red Robins Companions, it’s this: growing older shouldn’t mean becoming lonely. Sometimes all it takes is one friendly face, a little extra support and someone who genuinely cares to make a real difference to someone’s life. That’s what every Robin sets out to do.
Thank you again for the opportunity to share our story. We look forward to continuing to support older people and their families across our wonderful community.
