We caught up with Rhys of Carter & George in St. Albans to learn how they’re bringing elite-level physiotherapy to the local community.

Have you always wanted to be in the world of physiotherapy? How did you get involved with this industry?

Physiotherapy has always fascinated me because it combines science, movement, and the very human goal of helping people feel and move better. My journey started through sport - like many physios, I was a young athlete and found myself in the treatment room more often than I’d like! But it gave me a real appreciation for what physiotherapy can do, not just physically but mentally too. I knew early on that I wanted to be on the other side of that process - helping people return to doing what they love.

What challenges are people usually facing before coming to you?

Most people come to us when they’ve hit a wall - whether that’s an ongoing injury, chronic pain, or a performance issue that just won’t budge. Many have tried other treatments that didn’t quite work or felt they were just managing symptoms. They’re frustrated and looking for answers - and a team that truly listens.

How do you, at Carter & George, approach physiotherapy differently?

We combine elite-level treatment with a truly personal approach. Jamie George and I met at school and became close friends over the years. After returning from working as a physiotherapist in Dubai, I began exploring options to open my first practice here in Hertfordshire. Jamie and I shared a belief that the standard of care elite athletes receive - what we call "elite physio" - should be accessible to everyone, not just professionals in sport. That shared vision became the foundation of our business partnership and the driving force behind Carter & George.

At our clinics, one size definitely doesn’t fit all. Our sessions go beyond ticking boxes - we take time to listen, assess thoroughly, and build tailored treatment plans that genuinely work. We also bring technology and data into the mix, using tools like gait analysis and strength testing to get a complete picture of each client’s needs. Our roots in elite sport mean we hold ourselves to the highest standards, and we deliver that same level of care to every client - whether they’re an athlete or someone just looking to move better and feel healthier.

Why St. Albans for your latest clinic?

We’re really proud to have opened Carter & George in St Albans. Jamie has spent over 16 years playing for Saracens, so this area holds a lot of significance for him - it’s been a major part of his life. That local connection, combined with the city’s strong focus on health and performance, made it a natural fit for our latest clinic. It’s a great opportunity to bring our high-quality physiotherapy services to a community that truly values wellbeing.

How do you see elite care changing your clients’ lives?

The biggest transformation we see is confidence. When people move without pain or limitation, they get their freedom back. Elite care isn't just about fixing what's wrong - it's about empowering people to do more, feel better, and think differently about what their bodies can achieve. That mindset shift is powerful.

What would people be surprised to know about the business?

Probably that we treat a huge variety of people - not just athletes! From new mums recovering postpartum, to desk-based professionals with posture issues, to retirees wanting to stay active - we tailor everything to the individual. Also, we’re involved in research and education, so there’s a real depth behind what we do.

Top tip for people training hard and looking after their bodies?

Don’t underestimate recovery! Everyone focuses on training, but rest, mobility work, and nutrition are just as important. Listen to your body - pain isn’t weakness, it’s information. And consistency beats intensity every time.

What are you excited about going forward?

We’re always looking to grow - both in locations and innovation. We’re working on some exciting tech partnerships that will bring even more insight into our clients’ health journeys. And of course, building deeper roots in St. Albans and connecting with the community is something we’re passionate about.

What do you like most about what you do?

The moments when a client lights up because they’ve achieved something they thought they couldn’t - that never gets old. Whether it’s walking without pain, running their first 10K, or just feeling strong again—it’s incredibly rewarding.

Favourite places to go in St. Albans when not working?

Verulamium Park is a real favourite - it’s a lovely place to take the children to feed the ducks and go for a walk. I also love exploring the local cafés -St. Albans has a great independent food scene, which is perfect for post-clinic wind downs!

lastly, tell us a Fun fact about yourself?

I was born in Australia and have lived and worked in Singapore and Dubai - it’s been a great way to see how top-notch health systems work around the world!
